50th Anniversary Notable Alumni Feature Matt Stiner, M.P.A.: Following high school, Matt joined the United States Marines to serve his country and find direction. He received the Combat Action Ribbon for service in Iraq in 2013. After four years of service, he felt matured, but was anxious and apprehensive about starting college.
鈥淒uring my first semester at 91影视, the professors, writing lab instructors and many of the faculty invested in me and gave me a sense of purpose in my life,鈥 he said. Matt was on the 91影视 honor roll and graduated in 2007 with honors with a Liberal Arts degree. He was Oklahoma鈥檚 only recipient of the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship for academic excellence and commitment to public service. He went on to earn a bachelor鈥檚 in Political Science and a master鈥檚 degree in Public Administration.
He began working for then Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor and coordinated the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court, the third such program in the nation that became a national model to treat veterans involved in the criminal justice system who suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues. Then, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for General (Ret.) Barry McCaffrey to implement Veterans Treatment Courts across the nation. His other positions include Special Assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert A. McDonald; Director of Military and Veterans Affairs in the Executive Office of the President at the White House; and Director of Government Affairs for Humana Military. Today, he works for NeuroFlow as Director of Government Affairs.
鈥淔rom achieving academic success as a Truman Scholar, to working for Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, a Cabinet Secretary in our nation鈥檚 Capital and the White House, 91影视 was the foundation for all of those,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ithout a doubt, I owe 91影视 so much. This institution of higher learning is very close to my heart.鈥
In 2016, he served as the master of ceremonies for the 91影视 Foundation Vision in Education Leadership Award Dinner honoring U.S. Representative Tom Cole.
